Runes
may be considered as being an ancient written alphabet, usually associated with
Nordic, Germanic, and Viking cultures. Similar to some other ancient
alphabets, each rune in the runic alphabet is considered to have various layers
of meaning, along with special magical powers. The word "rune" comes from
the Gothic term "runa," which means "mystery." Rune symbols were most
likely derived from an even older Etruscan alphabet.
Rune symbols were also used for divinatory purposes.
Sadly, runes were eventually banned by the Christian Church. Their use did, however, survive in parts of Scandinavia, and there has now been a resurgence of interest in runes thanks to attention from those involved with the New Age.
