Designer: Alexander Egorov
Publisher: Piatnik, Vienna
Copyright Date: 1992
Number of cards in pack: 78
Suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Coins
Notes: An attractive and unusual deck of tarot cards. Called "Gold Edition", and there is use of the color gold on both the faces of the cards and on the back. We've never seen any other edition. The booklet that comes with the cards states that "All the cards are designed in an original old Russian style, using the divinatory meaning of each card. In this sense, the artwork puts one in mind of the Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg deck, perhaps not surprisingly, since Egorov was born in St. Petersburg.
The cards do have their names displayed, as shown above: large type for English, then smaller type for German and French. The quality of cards is quite nice, as one would expect from Piatnik, a respected playing card manufacturer in Europe.
The instruction booklet that comes with the deck is in English only, and is 64 pages in length. Most of the text is devoted to meanings of each card, and reversed meanings are also given. Basically, one who has never done tarot readings before could make a good start of it with this deck and included instructions. The Celtic spread is demonstrated.
Advanced readers will probably also enjoy this deck - the artwork is very nice, and it would not be difficult with this deck to get in a sort of mystical Russian mood, whatever one's heritage.
The Egorov Tarot is rarely available in the USA.
